Traditional Weaning vs Baby-Led Weaning

Weaning – a stage where every child will go through. Usually, it starts at 6 months but some start slightly earlier depending on the advice by your pediatrician. Weaning means a process where your child begins their first time to take solid food other than the milk given (be it formula or breast milk). There are a few types of weaning but the more common ones are traditional weaning or baby-led weaning.

Traditional Weaning

  • Smooth purees and mashed food
  • Spoon-feeding
  • Parent decide how much they eat
  • Child learn to swallow before chewing
  • Less messy

Baby Led-Weaning

  • Child feed themselves
  • Soft finger size food is offered
  • Child decide how much to eat and when to stop
  • Child learn to chew before swallow
  • Messy

There is no right or wrong in choosing which one and it is entirely up to you or your child to decide which one to better fit your lifestyle and preference. So, mummies and daddies, don’t compare with others and just do what is best for you and your child. Either way, they are still getting the nutrition they need for development. Whichever way you choose, make sure you do some research on it to better prepare yourself and your child. Welcome to the weaning stage!
